About Us
The Department of Applied English (DAE) was founded in 1993, its Master’s Program, in 2000, and its In-Service Master Program, in 2008. The mission of the department is to cultivate English professionals with competitiveness, excellent communication skills, and international perspectives.
The DAE’s bachelor’s degree program not only lays stress on the enhancement of students’ capacity to put English to daily use, but also empowers students with professional knowledge, professional English proficiency, and cross-cultural competence. All courses offered by the DAE are taught in English and based on two axes – the Four-Year Integrated English Curriculum and the Professional Curriculum.
| The first axis, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing courses, drills the students in public speaking and feature reporting and develops the advanced writing ability needed for feature reports.
| The second axis consists of two modules, English Business and Tourism and English Teaching & Bilingual Education, providing students with comprehensive professional training in such areas as business management, tourism, interpretation/translation, English teaching, and cross-cultural communication.
We also provide many extracurricular activities and overseas study opportunities to enhance learners’ motivation and opportunities for real-world English language use.
Our Feaures
| Cross-cultural Communication
We emphasize cross-cultural understanding and communication. Our curriculum equips students with fluent English proficiency and the competence to cope with various cross-cultural contexts. We offer various learning opportunities to enrich students’ horizons in this globalized era. Integrating culture in students’ learning environment, we have the best authentic culture classrooms: American culture classroom and British tea culture classroom.
| English as the Instructional Medium
We offer four-year English proficiency training. Students develop their English fluency and are trained to express their viewpoints easily and to think critically. All courses are instructed in English, and we arrange small classes for developing students’ writing and speaking skills. We offer various learning support for students, such as a self-learning center and study areas. We also provide a well-organized Teaching Assistant (TA) Program for all learners.
