Founded in 1993, the Department of Applied English (DAE) aims to train its students to be English professionals in many different fields. The following states DAE's mission along with the core competencies we work to develop in our students before their graduation.

| Structure

At present, our faculty is composed of 18 full-time teachers, including 2 professors, 9 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, and 2 instructors. Their specialties range includes TESOL, Linguistics, English and American Literature, Cross-Cultural Studies, Translation, Business English, and ESP. Moreover, more than 50 foreign instructors and professors are in charge of the school-wide Practical English Program and other English courses in our department.

We hold an annual island-wide conference to enhance our standard of teaching and research. We also offer professional advancement by inviting outstanding scholars in the field of English teaching.

We have an excellent teaching faculty and offer extension programs at community colleges in Guei-shan Village, Ying-Ge Township, and Taoyuan County as well.

Our graduates have acquired a good reputation in the job market for their fine training and professional English ability.

Our students participate in English teaching practice in cooperation with Guei-shan elementary school, Zhung-hu elementary school, and Yu-cheng senior high school. Gradually, our department will offer more similar services to other schools in the community.

Our department is now in the process of working out a cooperative program with universities in other countries to offer our students more opportunities to go abroad for summer courses and short-term exchange programs. This will provide them a chance to be in an English-speaking environment, to learn more about the language, to engage in more participation in their English learning process, and to broaden their cross-cultural experiences.

Our department has many high-tech facilities, including a multifunctional language lab, VOD lab, and audio-visual lab for practices of listening, speaking, and reading. The CAI software provides students with materials for the practice of reading, writing, and translation. We also have more than 1000 professional ESL books, more than 200 English teaching videotapes, and English teaching cassettes to train students' listening abilities.

Our Interpretation lab is well-equipped with computers and projectors and provides students with the best equipment for audio and visual recording for interpretations and oral presentations.

The American cultural classroom and culture hallway are decorated according to different topics to provide the students with an American cultural background and enrich their language learning experience.

In 2019, we constructed a British Tea Culture Classroom. The classroom offers multi-functional purposes for our learning. We integrate the theme such as the British afternoon tea manner to our courses. Students have the chance to experience a traditional British tea culture.

According to a phone survey by the MCU Job Placement Section, the employment rate of our graduates is as high.

The phenomenon of high employment rate for our graduates reflects the integration of our theoretical and practical courses, from which students receive adequate English training so that they can apply in practice what they have learned in school.

In addition to being required to have a good command of English, students are also expected to specialize in some applied areas such as English teaching, education, management, and other job-related studies. Our Department's seminar/thesis training is designed for such purposes. Through such training, students not only can improve their English ability but can also use their thesis when they look for jobs or apply for graduate studies. In particular, a substantial portion of our students takes up English teaching as their seminar/thesis topic.

Founded in 2000, the Graduate Program in Applied English has the mission to cultivate professionals in TESL and ESP who have the ability to construct knowledge and to apply this knowledge to their professional areas. The in-Service Graduate Program was founded in 2007 with the same mission and educational goals for its graduate students.

The two aims of this graduate program are: (1) to cultivate and train the English-language teaching professionals; (2) to cultivate and train specialists who will serve in enterprises such as in the fields of translation and interpretation, economic and trade management, tourism management, etc.
Our graduate program emphasizes proficiency in the English language and provides students with professional knowledge and skills that are related to their chosen fields.
All courses are conducted in English, students are immersed in a 100-percent English-speaking environment, where they can enhance speaking and listening comprehension skills and ensure their fluency and comfort of using the English language.
